This is just a small sitting area at the end of Albany St, but it includes a fanciful collection of imaginative columns. Some with pediments. Some not. They are all covered with brownish-red tiles. The center-most column has a pretty tile mosaic. Great view of The Hudson River and Jersey City skyline, which is growing by the minute. This spot also borders on the lovely Battery Park City Esplanade, which is well worth a visit.
Pretty little building that is now acting as a subway station entrance and exit. Clearly from an older time as it has some classic old architectural styling. This building is right at the edge of Battery Park along State Street.
This is one of my favorite galleries! Contemporary but realistic works, often powerful, moving portraits and figurative paintings. CURRENTLY SHOWING AN ANDREW WYETH RETROSPECTIVE. VERY GOOD. MAKE SURE TO SEE THE BACK ROOM FOR MORE, PLUS A COUPLE OF WONDERFUL PIECES BY DAD AND SON. This exhibit is OVER.
Nice little plaza with tables, chairs, planters with lovely flowers and trees in season. Also a ping pong table and BEAUTIFUL COLORFUL MURAL THAT RUNS THE FULL LENGTH OF THE PLAZA.
I love this set of statues. Whimsical, fun but also kind of cynical. Note that some of the characters are on the top of the light poles around the site. Also; all the pennies are just showing the back side. Even the pennies which have both sides exposed show the back side on each face!
Supposedly this is because the sculpture, Tom Otterness is an atheist and the front side of pennies has the phrase, "in God we trust."
Tom Otterness is hated by some because in his early years he made a short indy film for which a got a dog from an animal shelter, tied it to a post and filmed himself shooting it. This was decades ago and he has apologized several times and shown remorse, but some people just can't forgive.
