We are spending a weekend in Portage la Prairie, and decided to check out the 'Fort La Reine' museum on the outskirts of town. I wasn't expecting much, but ended up being blown away. There is a lot to see, and you're pretty much given free reign to wander around and look at the houses/artifacts. There are about a dozen houses and various buildings from the late 19th century and early 20th century depicting various eras of life on the prairies. There is also a small railway display, and a building dedicated to the military history in the area. Oh, and don't forget the huge Allis Chalmers building FILLED with old tractors and farm equipment.
If you're ever in the area of PLP and have a few hours to spare, check out Fort La Reine museum. It's 100% worth the $10 entry fee ($5 for kids!)
